If you use Google Analytics as religiously as I use it then I’m sure that you know how to check traffic statistics about your website.  One area that is important for people to understand is the types of traffic that websites can generate hits from and how to apply this knowledge into growing your own website’s traffic.  After all, it’s all about traffic when it comes to a website.  The traffic sources that a website can have fall into 1 of 3 categories including traffic from search engines, referring sites and traffic that comes directly to your website.  The good thing is that Google Analytics tracks them all!

• Search Engines – This includes your standard search engine delivered traffic from Google, MSN, Bing, Yahoo! and all the others.  What defines search engine traffic is that it’s delivered by people searching keywords on a search engine to find web page on your website.
• Referring Sites – This includes traffic from any website that refers traffic to your website.  If your blog or website is in other people’s blogs or websites and they click on your link and come to your website Google Analytics will add these hits as referral traffic.
• Direct Traffic – Direct traffic, just like it sounds is traffic that is coming directly to your website by either typing in your website URL or clicking on a direct link going straight to your website.  As you build more trust with readers on your website or blog you may see the direct traffic statistics come up.

Ultimately, these are three ways of getting traffic and its best to not get them confused.  Understanding the key differences between them shows you insights into where you can improve your website’s traffic and keep people coming back for more!

One common question is, “How many affiliates should I sign up with?” and the answer to this question is different for everyone.  I’ve personally noticed that keeping a few business relationships open with a couple affiliate programs works best for me because it allows me to maximize and disburse the most amount of hits to a couple of affiliate programs and in turn increase my success (and conversion rates) selling through a couple of highly effective affiliate marketing channels.

So let’s run through a couple of ways that you can distinguish the winning affiliate marketing programs from losing ones that are a waste of your time and don’t fit your needs.

• Trustworthy company – There is a lot to be said about working with a company that is trustworthy and in affiliate marketing means that you are putting trust in a company enough to represent their products and trust that they will pay you.  Make sure that you research the company you are selling for before you launch into promoting with their affiliate program.  If you are selling products that you are ethically opposed to then it’s probably not the company for you.  Just remember that there are plenty of affiliate programs out there and there are ones that will suit your needs.
• Relevance of products and services being offered – One thing that can have a big affect on the overall success of any affiliate marketing efforts on your website boils down to this question “Does the product/service I am promoting relate to the content and audience I am selling to?”  If you’ve signed up for an affiliate program to sell running shoes and your website content is all comic books it might be a hard sell trying to get people to buy through the affiliate marketing links you’ve placed on your website.  In testing a few affiliate programs related to the audience your website has may allow you to see higher profits and conversions but like I said you’ve got to test it out to find what works and the rest is common sense.
• Amount of Commission – When it comes to affiliate marketing a large part of it is about the commissions or the commission structure of the company you are promoting.  Commissions are what you get when you make sales in affiliate marketing and with that being said there are commissions that companies pay out that simply are not worth your time!  I personally avoid commissions that are less than 30% percent depending on the company and the product price point.  If a product selling for $150 and you get 20% of each sale you are going to make a commission of $30 per sale whereas if a product sells for $27 and you get a 10% commission on each sale you are going to make $2.70 per sale.  When you evaluate the amount of commission you are earning think about how much effort it’s going to take to make a sale and if it doesn’t add up then keep looking for a product or service to represent on your website that’s worth your time.
• Minimum Payouts – A minimum payout is the minimum amount of commissions you need to have earned with a particular affiliate program in order to release the funds from your affiliate marketing account so you can get paid.  Some affiliate marketing programs don’t have this option but most hold a certain amount of funds before paying out so looking at the minimum pay out with the affiliate marketing program you’re interested in and look at the average commissions you are going to receive to see if it’s really worth your time.  If you have to make 50 sales to reach the minimum payout rate it may not be worth your time but if it takes 2 or 3 then it may be worth the time and effort.

To some extent you need to go through trial and error and test to see which affiliate programs are going to work for your website and what works for one website doesn’t necessarily work for another.  When looking at and analyzing this information to choose an affiliate marketing campaign, it’s important to understand and know what to look for in an affiliate marketing program that is going to make it a “winner” for you.

Picking great affiliate marketing takes a bit of effort, time, some analysis and some action on your part to see what’s really going to work for you, on your website or as a part of your online business but it’s definitely worth your time to explore this as a potential income stream.

Now I don’t know how many people that are interested in design books and guides are also interested in the world cup but I thought it was an interesting enough online marketing idea that deserves discussion.

The purpose of the “This Cup” online marketing promotion is to sell e-books at a reduced rate through a series of rounds, similar to the real World Cup and as teams advance the e-book for that country advances as well until a winner is declared which the e-book is available for free for 24 hours.

So what makes this online marketing promotion successful?

• Creates a sense of urgency – The smart thing about this online marketing promotion idea is that it has a beginning, middle and an end.  What it does for people is creates that “sense of urgency” to come to a buying decision quickly or they are going to miss out on the possibility of getting these e-books at a reduced prices.
• Outlines the savings of the promotion – In aiding the potential customer to make that ever important buying decision this promotion also tells the buyer what they are saving and what they would be losing out on if they don’t buy
• Sense of mystery – During each round the customer is not sure what will be on sale next so if there is an e-book that a customer wants there is no certainty that the e-book will be available in the next round.  Talk about an added sense of urgency.  It also adds the sense of mystery because you don’t know with 100% certainty that the e-book you are watching will be available.

• Email Marketing List Development – Added to this page is an option to sign-up to “Follow the action” with round by round email updates.  This is definitely a clever way to develop your email marketing list further during a promotion and define a specific customer segment like “people who expressed interest in our e-books”.

• Outlining the Rules of the promotion – It’s important with any online marketing promotion to have the rules and guidelines of the promotion clearly written, easy to understand and available on the landing page where the promotion is taking place.  Doing this helps tie together all the points I’ve listed above to creating a promotion that is going to sell and increase average conversion rates into outstanding conversion rates.

Where could this online marketing promotion improve?

There is really only one place where this online marketing promotion fails and it’s something that is relatively simple to fix.  If you go to an e-book and try to click on it to buy it you are re-directed to the top of the same page.  In order to buy the e-book you need to hover over a specific e-book and click on the link in the mouse over effect in order to buy the e-book.  It could be very frustrating to your average website user to achieve the main action of this online marketing promotion which is to buy e-books at a reduced price.

This doesn’t make this promotion a complete failure but it is something to note for your own online marketing promotion to make sure you understand how people are going to use your web page so that something like this doesn’t hold you back from having a successful online marketing campaign for your own products.
